Powering Up with DTE: A Fourth Grade Energy Adventure

It was an electrifying day for 4th grade scholars at GEC when special guests from DTE Energy arrived, ready to spark curiosity and teach students all about energy and energy efficiency.

The visit kicked off with an engaging presentation where students learned how energy is generated, the difference between renewable and non-renewable sources, and why using energy wisely matters for our planet. The room buzzed with excitement as students asked questions and shared what they already knew.

Then came the highlight of the day: the Human Circuit Challenge! With laughter and teamwork, students formed a giant human circuit, each representing a part of an electrical pathway — from power source to switch to light bulb. When everyone was connected, the “energy” flowed, and the “light bulb” lit up with a cheer. It was a powerful demonstration of how energy travels and how every part of a system matters.

To wrap up the visit, DTE handed out special “Take Action” bags filled with household items like LED light bulbs, faucet aerators, and energy-saving tips. Students were thrilled to take them home and become energy efficiency ambassadors in their own families.
